Have questions about ordering the 5th edition or your desk copy?
Answers to Customer Questions about Reader's Choice, 5th Ed. (Split and Full)
Q: Do I have to use the 5th edition in the fall? Will copies of the 4th edition still be in print? (This question might come from people teaching overseas.)
A: Copies of the 4th edition will be available while supplies last. It will not be reprinted. However, we recommend that you order books as soon as possible if you want to use the 4th edition because stock is limited and it will not be reprinted.
Q: How much of the book has been changed in this edition?
A: It's a substantive revision. Every unit has been updated in some way. In the readings units, at least one reading has been removed and replaced and sometimes more. A few examples: "The Dusty Drawer" in Unit 14 has been replaced by a short story by Jhumpa Lahiri (Pulitzer-Prize winner). Unit 7 now features several charts and graphs, and other websites and online material have been added to better replicate the reading we do today. Fiction by Julia Alvarez and an essay by Amy Tan have been added as well. New readings require new vocabulary activities and comprehension exercises.
Q: What will be on the companion website? And when?
A: Based on use of the companion site for the 4th edition, we have eliminated expansion activities for the readings and are focusing more on vocabulary-oriented quizzes for the skills units. Unlike the site for the 4th edition, these activities will be interactive. This site is now active at www.press.umich.edu/esl/readerschoice/.
Q: Where is the answer key? / Why was the answer key removed from the book? (There are 2 keys on the website, one for split and one for full. They are NOT on the companion site.)
A: Although many customers liked having the key in the back of the book, many others did not. To address both sets of concerns, we have posted the key on our website in the teacher support area. It is printable if you want to give your students access to it.
Q: Where is the sample lesson plan that used to be printed in the book? Has it been updated?
A: Like the answer key, the To the Teacher section can be found in the teacher support area of our website. Because the content of the book has changed in this edition, the lesson plan has indeed been updated.
Q: When will the second half of the book, Units 7-13, be published?
A: It's unclear if the second half of the book will be published. Sales of Book 2 have never been especially strong. However, if we receive enough customer requests that the second half be published, we will consider it. Email esladmin@umich.edu to make that request.
